The Best Moscow Mules in NWI and the Midwest

We’re huge Moscow Mule fans. Done right, the Moscow Mule is the ideal, effervescent mix of ginger, lime and, of course, vodka. So, in honor of #MoscowMuleDay on March 3, let’s explore the basics of the best Moscow Mules, and where to enjoy them.

Moscow Mule Tip #1 : The Mug Matters

We’re convinced that a Moscow Mule in anything other than a proper Moscow Mule vessel doesn’t taste the same. It doesn’t have to be a 100% OG copper mug — those are quote spendy at $49 per mug — but, it has to be served in something resembling the real deal. Serving us a Moscow Mule in a traditional glass is the quickest way to lose our attention, and our patronage.

Fact: Did you know that the very first Moscow Mules were served in limited edition copper mugs brought over from Russia? The family that made those original mugs still sells them, or at least they offer mugs made just like the ones brought over from the Soviet Union in 1941.

Moscow Mule Tip #2: Variations welcome!

Since 1941, there have been hundreds of variations of the Moscow Mule. We haven’t sampled them all, although we are certainly trying!

There are fruity Moscow Mules, like the raspberry and blueberry varieties at Tavern on Main in Crown Point, IN. (Highly recommend; pair ‘em with the Buffalo Cauliflower.)

There are Mezcal Moscow Mules, like the El Silencio Mezcal version sold at Pink Taco in Chicago.

There are Texas Mules, Spicy Mules, Lavender Mules Kentucky Mules and more. Which type is your favorite?

Best Moscow Mules in NWI and the MidBEST

Like we said, we haven’t tried every Moscow Mule in the MidBEST… but, we are working on it. So far, these have been some of our favorite spots to sip the icy classic…

LuxBar in Chicago thanks largely to the crushed ice — yes, ice — which takes the drink over the top when paired with Midwest made cane-sugar infused Goose Island Spicy Ginger Beer.

JourneyMan Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan made with JourneyMan Distillery Red Arrow vodka, naturally.

As mentioned above, Tavern on Main in Crown Point, IN.

The Ball & Biscuit in Indianapolis.

Fahrenheit Two Twelve in Crown Point, Indiana.

Ada Street in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago.

Ricochet Tacos in Valparaiso. Because the infamous Moscow Mule is perfect with the heat of Mexican food and Ricochet serves up some of the best, most imaginative tacos in the MidBEST.

Craft House in Chesterton, Indiana thanks to many variety of the classic cocktail offered up at reasonable price points. A great cozy, low-key spot to sidle up to the bar and get your sip on.

Everything is better at the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee. Go in the spring or summer, sit + sip on the deck, and enjoy all the best that Milwaukee has to offer. That’s quite a bit! (Side note: Best brunch ever.)
