Downtown Hair Studio in Lowell, Indiana

Sisters, Cindy Sanders and Chris Haerlin, opened their business in Lowell, Indiana almost four decades ago. Initally a hair salon for women, Downtown Hair Studio evolved over time with the addition of men’s services, nail and skin services, and beyond. As the offerings grew, so too did the staff, going from an intimate group of four to an expansive team of 23 beauty experts.

Mattie Stonebraker is a stylist at Downtown Hair Studio who proudly calls herself a, “second generation hair stylist.” Mattie is Chris’s daughter and Cindy’s niece; she was inspired by the careers and creativity she learned from her Mom and Aunt, respectively. She shared with us some of her favorite Northwest Indiana spots as well as just a few of the reasons she’s excited about opening again for services, safely, starting May 18, 2020.

LIVENWI: What are your favorite local destinations?

MSB: “This is uber hard! I am so proud to be in our area. There is really so much to do and see, at least when we are not quarantined! As far as our immediate area, being close to McVeys, Sickinger’s, and MiRanchito is wonderful. And, they are all family owned businesses that are wonderful to work with. Outside of that... I love taking a walk and seeing the trains at Taltree Arboretum (now called Gabis), the tacos and atmosphere at Ricochet is a fav, and shopping at Blue Pear makes my heart sing.”

LIVENWI: What’s the best thing about life in NWI?

MSB: “I mean it, I am proud to be in our area. We have so much to offer, so many great places to eat, amazing boutiques, salons that can conquer any beauty need, school systems that thrive, the dunes and other walking trails, and people that are like no other. The fast pace of the city but the heart of the country. The Region is where it is at!”

LIVENWI: What's your best beauty tip and biggest beauty mistake?

MSB: “Beauty is not vain nor high maintenance... it is self care. You must fill your cup and feel good before you can make others feel good. Inside and out. My best beauty tip is to drink plenty of water, it is the first step to shiny hair, glowing skin, and strong nails. And, I think the biggest beauty mistake people make is waiting too long to take care of their hair, skin, and nails. The sooner you start the less money and time you have to spend repairing it.”
